Do You Like Where You Work?

At ACHIEVE Centre for Leadership & Workplace Performance, where I am the CEO, a key belief that guides the creation and delivery of our services is that people should be able to like where they work. At a fundamental level, we believe that when people like where they work, organizations are not only more fun and enjoyable, but also more innovative and productive.

Healthy and likeable organizations are not just good for our mental health and well-being, but also for the organization’s success – financial and otherwise. When workplaces are respectful and inspiring, employees will naturally be more engaged and work harder.

Unfortunately, far too many people don’t like where they work. Sometimes it’s because the organization they work in is toxic and disrespectful behavior is rampant. Other people may find that their workplace is simply sterile and uninspiring. Regardless of one’s individual experience, for a variety of reasons many people feel trapped, are bored or simply hate their jobs.

Our organization is in the business of helping create workplaces where everyone likes to work. The workshops, services and resources we provide are geared towards helping people cultivate, create and sustain workplaces that are respectful, engaging and meaningful.

To do this effectively, we first had to create an environment in our own organization that mirrors the principles we teach and speak about. When clients walk into our office it is important to us that they can see we actually “walk the talk” – that our belief in the value of a healthy and likeable workplace culture is authentic.

We have worked hard to create a workplace where people want to work, and we are passionate about sharing our experiences with others. I am excited to share that in the coming months, together with three other authors, I will be working on a new book on how to create a culture where everyone likes to work. This book will rely heavily on a survey we are presently conducting about what makes an organization a great place to work.
